What is travel accident insurance?

Travel accident insurance protects you abroad from the financial consequences that can arise from accidents.
The insurance cover includes accidents worldwide for the insured group of persons.

Who needs travel accident insurance?

The insurance coverage of the statutory accident insurance does not include stays abroad, so if an accident happens abroad, you are without protection.

However, not everyone needs a travel accident insurance, if you already have a private accident insurance, you usually do not need a separate travel accident insurance*.

However, if you are planning a group trip, it looks different. Often you cannot ask each participant individually whether they have private travel accident insurance with worldwide coverage. In this case, we recommend our property package, which can be booked for little money.

Here, in addition to the travel accident insurance, a travel liability and a travel legal protection insurance are included, which provide for an all-round protection

*Please pay attention to the insured period & area of validity that is specified in the insurance policy for stays abroad, some providers limit this.

What benefits does the travel accident insurance cover?

Travel accident insurance offers financial protection in the event of accidents that occur during a trip. The benefits depend on the type and degree of damage to health caused by the accident. The benefits include:

  • Disability benefit: A one-off payment based on the degree of disability and the agreed sum insured. The benefit is payable if the disability occurs within one year of the accident and is medically certified.
  • Full disability benefit: An additional payment based on the agreed sum insured. The benefit is payable if the disability is 100% and occurs within three years of the accident.
  • Accidental death: A one-off payment based on the agreed sum insured. The benefit is payable if the insured person dies as a result of the accident within one year of the accident.
  • Accident pension: A monthly payment based on the degree of disability and the agreed sum insured. The benefit is payable if the disability is at least 50% and is expected to be permanent.
  • Cosmetic operations: Reimbursement of the costs of medically necessary operations to eliminate or reduce the consequences of an accident that affect the external appearance. The amount of reimbursement depends on the agreed sum insured.
  • Rescue costs/accident service: Reimbursement of the costs for the search, rescue or recovery of the insured person after an accident or in the event of acute danger to life. The amount of reimbursement depends on the agreed sum insured.
  • Health cure allowance: Reimbursement of the costs of a health cure prescribed by a doctor within two years of an accident. The amount of the reimbursement depends on the agreed sum insured.
  • Immediate benefit in the event of serious injury: A one-off payment based on the agreed sum insured. The benefit is payable if the insured person suffers one of the following injuries as a result of an accident: paraplegia, amputation, craniocerebral trauma, burns, blindness or deafness.

Travel accident insurance comparison - what does travel accident insurance cost per year?

Rates Premium per day/person
Age groups up to 34 years 0,26 €
Age group 35 - 64 years 0,46 €
Age group from 65 years 0,92 €

*The property package consists of liability, accident and legal expenses insurance (without luggage insurance).

Example of costs for travel accident insurance for a group trip:

You are the organizer of a group trip to Rome for 15 people who are members of the Heritage Society. The trip costs €500 per person and you have taken out travel accident insurance with a sum insured of €100,000 per person. The daily premium per person is only € 0.46.

During a visit to the Colosseum, one of your participants has an unfortunate fall on a flight of stairs and breaks his leg. He is taken to hospital and needs an operation. The treatment costs amount to €10,000, which is covered by his health insurance. However, he has suffered a permanent disability of 20% as a result of the accident.

In this case, the travel accident insurance pays him a disability benefit of €20,000 (20% of €100,000). In addition, he will receive a cure allowance of €2,000 (2% of €100,000) to finance a rehabilitation cure. The total benefit therefore amounts to €22,000.

You can see how important travel accident insurance is to protect yourself and your participants from the financial consequences of an accident abroad. For a low premium of just €0.46 per day and person, you can secure a high sum insured that will provide you with adequate compensation in the event of a claim.

What does the travel accident insurance not cover?

Not insured are:

  • Accidents caused by motorized vehicles, where the aim is to reach maximum speeds
  • Rescue costs (e.g. helicopter transport to the valley), due to altitude sickness)

What is important to consider when it comes to daily hospital allowance?

The daily hospital allowance is paid for each calendar day of full inpatient treatment, up to a maximum of two years from the date of the accident.

What is the effect of illnesses and infirmities that existed before the accident?

As accident insurance, we provide benefits for the consequences of accidents. Illnesses and infirmities that contributed to the health impairment caused by an accident event can therefore reduce the benefit.

Which persons cannot be insured?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to insure persons permanently in need of care, as well as persons whose participation in general life is permanently excluded.

What must be considered after an accident?

The insured person must immediately consult a doctor after an accident, follow his or her orders and inform the accident insurance company. After sending the accident report, the insurance company may order examinations by other doctors. In the event of death as a result of the accident, this must be reported to the insurance company within 48 hours, even if the accident has already been reported.
