Everything you need to know about health insurance for Erasmus students

Our international health insurance specially designed for Erasmus students offers you comprehensive cover so that you can enjoy your semester abroad to the full and without worries! A semester abroad is a unique opportunity to get to know new cultures, learn a foreign language and gain valuable international experience. However, it is important to remember that living abroad can also bring challenges. One of these is health. Sometimes you can fall ill unexpectedly, especially when you are in a new environment with different climatic conditions and food. In such cases, it is invaluable to have reliable health insurance.

With our Erasmus international health insurance, you can have all these experiences worry-free. You can rest assured that you are covered in the event of a medical emergency and can instead focus on immersing yourself in your host country and gaining unforgettable experiences.

How do I become an Erasmus student?

The EU's Erasmus funding programme is open to students of all disciplines who are regular students at a participating higher education institution. Students from EU countries and some non-EU countries(Programme Countries) can participate in all actions of the funding programme. From other partner countries only under certain conditions. The costs for the Erasmus funding program are paid from the EU budget (Euro). Meanwhile, almost 40% of all students travel abroad for one or more semesters or complete an internship there.

How can I apply as an erasmus student?

The Erasmus coordinators at the college or university provide application information as an Erasmus student for all students. Important questions are: Which country, which uni and how it is funded. What are the motivations for applying and what are the language skills. Whether it works out with the application also depends on the availability of places, which should be taken into account when choosing the three desired destinations - as an alternative, definitely consider a smaller host university.

Who pays for Erasmus?

Scholarship holders do not pay tuition fees but receive a monthly grant starting at 490 euros - depending on the country. Erasmus funding is tax-free. The costs for the Erasmus program are financed from the EU budget (euro).

Welche Versicherung brauche ich als Erasmus Student?

Students who spend a semester abroad as part of the Erasmus program must have health insurance abroad. This applies both to German students abroad (e.g. USA) and to foreign students studying in Germany.

We offer Erasmus students comprehensive health and travel cover for up to 5 years abroad with our health insurance for students abroad.

For a safe semester abroad, we recommend taking out an additional property package consisting of emergency, liability, accident and luggage insurance as all-round insurance cover. This means you can travel with a clear conscience and don't have to worry about your health - or your wallet.

► Choose health insurance

Why do I need health insurance as a student?

In European countries with which a social security agreement exists, you are covered by your statutory health insurance. For this purpose, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) of your health insurance company is required. However, this cover does NOT apply to countries that are not in Europe or do not belong to the EU.

In case of sudden illness abroad and if you are dependent on medical care or in case of an accident where you have to be treated in hospital, the health insurance from your home country often does not cover you. If you do not have the appropriate travel insurance, you may be faced with costs in four or five figures, which is not uncommon in the USA, for example.

Our tip: before starting your semester abroad, check exactly which services are covered and which are not. This way, you can ensure that you have sufficient health insurance abroad that is tailored to your individual needs and, in particular, to the duration of your stay abroad.

What does the health insurance for students abroad cover?

Medical treatment + repatriation

The travel health insurance for students covers the most important costs for medical treatment, be it outpatient or inpatient. It also covers the cost of medication and repatriation if this is medically reasonable and justifiable. If students or language students have to be treated after an accident or due to an illness, the travel health insurance will usually cover these costs.

Without travel health insurance, you will always have to bear the costs of this return transport - regardless of whether you are in a Schengen state or not, because your statutory health insurance does not generally cover medical transport from abroad.

Overview of the benefits of the international health insurance:

  • Cost absorption for medical treatment abroad (outpatient/inpatient)
  • Cost absorption for medication
  • Additional costs for repatriation of sick persons incl. baggage repatriation
  • repatriation of the insured in case of death
